It's does what I thought Sonar and other DAWs should have been concentrating on with video for at least several years. Yeah, after checking out some demos the past several days, I think Mixcraft's video handling is what makes it a real gem. The few features it's lacking may come to be down the road. For those that need live performance features, have a look at what MIxcraft did with markers. I've been using the demo all weekend and just loving it. Mixcraft will allow me to downsize to 1 program. I suggest that skeptics heed 11Dreams advice and just "Try it!"Īmpfixer Right now I'm using Sonar and Vegas (a light version) to do small instructional video's. Mixcraft is, well., Mixcraft, and there is a lot to love about it. Mixcraft isn't Sonar, nor is it any other high-end DAW. For example, Mixcraft had refined "Musical Typing" on a QWERTY keyboard three years before it appeared in Sonar, it out ACIDed ACID for track envelope drawing at least from Version 3 (the first I tried, and at about the same time ACID 7 was starting to behave like a DAW), and, since it is primarily a DAW and not a video NLE, it has continually out VEGASed VEGAS in providing a way to score complex musical tracks for video, something that it does better than probably any DAW other than Digital Performer. Mixcraft has even been an innovator in providing useful features in its interface. It wasn't until Mixcraft 7 that I ever even looked at the manual, and that was only as a guide for using some of the newer features of that release (the fact that Acoustica provided a full hard-copy manual with the Pro version of 7, is probably why I even bothered looking there in the first place). For bread and butter tasks like laying down VSTi tracks, audio tracks, assembling clips, and editing MIDI or audio tracks, RTFM is, simply, not required for most people. This, is what yields the illusion of DAW scaling. When you open Mixcraft, your brain makes guesses as to how to make it do what you want, and probably more than 90% of the time, your brain's first guess is correct. If you have used another DAW, you know what you are trying to do. What Mixcraft does, better than any other platform, IMO, is make all of those shared features much more intuitive. All linear DAWs share more features than they exclude. I think this kind of reaction to Mixcraft is mostly psychological. If this were a Cubase, Pro Tools, or Studio One forum, and the DAW of affection had just been Gibsoned, I can see members making exactly the same statement in regard to their favorite DAW (except for Pro Tools, where members who tried it would probably call Mixcraft a "scaled-up" version). 11Dreams Try it! its a scaled down Sonar. When materials are bought in bulk and stored in dusty, wet or extremely hot or cold conditions for extended periods, the adhesive deteriorates. If you leave milk on the counter overnight, it spoils. In this scenario, 1/4” wide might fall, but 1/2″ might do it. Think of it this way: Is there a big enough surface of sticky stuff applied to a substrate to hold the weight of the object stuck to the other side of the tape? Likewise, does the “other side” have a large enough surface of sticky stuff applied to it to hold the weight of the object? For example: If you need to adhere poly sheeting to a wall, you need to have a wide enough strip of double-coated tape to be able to hold the weight of the poly sheeting to the wall. The correct surface contact to weight ratio plays a factor. This will considerably reduce any tendency to migrate, thereby preventing tape failure. When using this type of material, choose a high-quality, double-coated tape specifically designed for PVC applications. If a typical pressure-sensitive adhesive is applied to PVC and allowed to remain in place for a prolonged period, the plasticizer will migrate from the PVC surface into the pressure-sensitive adhesive making the glue a gummy mess. This movement is known as “migration.”įor example, consider PVC: plasticized to provide flexibility, it is a lower-cost, lower-molecular weight material. Liquids such as oils, plasticizers, and dyes are a lighter weight material and can therefore easily “move” from the product (the surface) to be absorbed by any adjacent material (the tape). If the area where you will be using the tape sees above-average UV exposure, you may need to consider a different tool for the job. Absolutely not the qualities you want in a tape that needs to hold for any duration in a particular application. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light can cause certain chemical materials (such as natural and some synthetic rubbers as well as polyethylene) to become hard and brittle. To prevent tape failure, prepare the surface, give it a quick wash with rubbing alcohol and dry it with a clean cloth. Traces of dust, dirt, grease, and even the slightest hint of moisture before bonding will contaminate the adhesive surface and act as a barrier between the two. If you must work at lower temperatures, then use a temperature-sensitive double-sided tape specifically designed for colder climates. And on the flip side, extremely high temperatures can cause the adhesive to melt and lose its strength. Are both the tape and the surface at least 18✬/65✯? The tackiness of the adhesive tape is very temperature-dependent, and the colder the conditions, the weaker the bond will be. When in doubt, test the adhesive first to prevent tape failure.Ĭarefully factor in the temperature. Or, perhaps, it’s too aggressive and caused damage to the surface it was applied to. Maybe the one you chose isn’t aggressive enough and it fell off. Not all double-sided tapes are created equal. The package label made lofty promises, but generally speaking, adhesive testing should always be done before using double-sided tape. Here are the 8 most common reasons your double-sided tape won’t stick and how to prevent tape failure. It’s easy to assume the tape itself is to blame, but truth be told, there are some other usual suspects to consider first. Heavy-duty double-sided tape is useful in a wide range of construction scenarios, but no tool is perfect for every job. "That said, it’s possible that at some point in the war as a TEC 5 he commanded a tank if the unit was strapped for leaders," Kessler added, "and he was deemed capable enough by his superiors." Tuberville would have needed to be a sergeant to be a tank commander. "According to a 1944 Army memo, TEC 5 jobs were limited to armorer, cook, tank driver, light truck driver or tank mechanic. "Charles Tuberville’s tombstone lists his highest rank as 'TEC 5' or technician fifth grade, an Army rank at the time that indicated technical skills but not combat leadership," Kessler wrote. The Pentagon warns that Tuberville's holds are endangering military readiness because 650 general and flag officers will require Senate confirmation at the end of this year, but ironically, his inaccurate claims about his father promoted him to tank commander. "An examination of army histories, newspaper reports and other materials calls into question many of the claims put forth by Tuberville, who sits on both the Senate Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs committees and is now in a high-profile battle with the Biden administration over a Defense Department policy offering time off and travel reimbursement to service members who need to go out of state for abortions," wrote Post columnist Glenn Kessler. That fact alone further imperils what has become America’s fragile democracy."īut a Washington Post fact checker found some false elements in the senator's account. And there doesn’t seem to be any way that will change if the Murdochs maintain their absolute power and absolute control. "That’s dangerous under any circumstances, but it’s especially troubling at a national news organization, such as Fox, where disinformation and lies, apparently, are the coin of the realm. "Rupert Murdoch has had absolute power at both Fox and News Corp for far too long," Cohan wrote. Murdoch may be 92 years old, but his control of Fox and other media entities remains absolute. Smartmatic, or even the recently filed shareholder lawsuit against Fox, could end up pressuring Fox, and indirectly News Corp, to scrap their dual-class stock structures." "If it emerges victorious in its lawsuit, it could insist, as part of any settlement, on governance changes at Fox or even demand that the CEO succession process include candidates outside the Murdoch family. Murdoch may lie with Smartmatic," wrote Cohan. When dual classes of stock are involved, a family’s voting power often far outstrips its economic ownership, leading to financially foolish, and even bizarre, behavior."ĪLSO IN THE NEWS: Former DOJ official: Indictment for Trump's alleged election crimes will be a much bigger deal than the docs scandalĪmerican corporations turned to professional management a century ago to insulate shareholders from dynastic owners, and the Smartmatic defamation suit may finally break Murdoch's grip on the conservative media empire he controls. "To a lesser degree, I see problems occurring at companies such as Comcast (controlled by the Roberts family) and Paramount Global (controlled by Shari Redstone), among others. "The drama we’re watching play out at the Fox Corporation is an extreme example of how companies with a controlling shareholder can suffer - the stock is down almost 18 percent in the past five years - but it isn’t the only one," wrote columnist William D. The Fox News boss controls his empire through ownership of a special class of stock that gives him an outsized voting stake in the Fox Corporation and News Corp., and his leadership has survived recent challenges from so-called Class B shareholders, but a defamation lawsuit could finally topple him, reported the New York Times. Rupert Murdoch's fate is in the hand of voting machine company Smartmatic after paying out a whopping $787.5 million settlement to Dominion Voting Systems. The fact that it holds much more feels like an advancement of an art form. That really should be the only quality it needs to exhibit. If you buy a copy of this game, you will have fun, and really, that's the only recommendation that is required when discussing this medium.īioShock Infinite is a hell of a lot of fun to play. Whether or not you take anything away from BioShock Infinite beyond its story doesn't matter. The best aspect, however, is that all of this highfalutin preconception doesn't matter a damn. BioShock Infinite too has an unshakable claim to be challenging what we think games are capable of. In much the same way as Heavy Rain or Dark Souls may not be to everyone's taste, they are still important touchstones in the maturity of video games as an art form. This is a game that lives and dies on its story and to reveal any more of that to anyone who hasn't yet experienced it would be unforgivable.īioShock Infinite exists in a pantheon tagged "required reading" in the gaming medium. I would love to expound at length about the flying city of Columbia and the relationship between Booker and Elizabeth, but to do so would run the risk of ruining things. Really, the only sensible review of this game would be to instruct the reader to close this window, order a copy of the game and play it. Apply your experience as a player of games who can recognise tropes, traps and signs that the game you're playing can pre-empt your expectations and BioShock Infinite offers up some pretty damning data about what constitutes entertainment.Īnd here, already, I feel I've said too much. Follow the game's story to its eventual end and you'll likely leave satisfied, perhaps ready to tackle it on its super hardcore 1999 difficulty setting. They plonk the player in an other-worldly environment informed by historical social conventions and then put the ugliest side of humanity on display.īioShock Infinite is similar to its predecessor in that it offers up a layered narrative. It's a trick that Irrational pull off so well. The year is 1912 and all of the racist and religious zealotry of that time are on full display. Players take on the role of former Pinkerton Booker De Witt who is charged with rescuing a young woman named Elizabeth in a fantastical flying city called Columbia. The bare facts of the plot are as follows. Its central appeal is wrapped up in its story and the less you know about that before booting up the game, the better a time you will have. I could go into lengthy detail about the game's "tear" mechanics, or the number of battles where using a sky-hook and rail adds another series of options, but that's not BioShock Infinite's main draw. There's hardly ever just one way to emerge from a firefight victorious the number of tactical alternatives open to the player is lengthy enough to offer hours upon hours of replay value. The corridors in this shooter are wide, frequently mutli-tiered and crammed to the rafters with weapons and enemies. You juggle guns and superpowers in a seemingly never-ending series of firefights with increasingly tougher opponents. If you didn't play BioShock, here's what you're in for. If you ever played BioShock, imagine a more layered environment where you can hold only two firearms and you have the help of a roaming AI that occasionally hurls you power-ups. It looks gorgeous, its mechanics are sublime and it's to Irrational's credit that the gameplay wrapped around the narrative is far more satisfying than that of its predecessor. If surface detail is all you care about, BioShock Infinite will keep you well stocked. Dig a little deeper, however, and you start wandering into the sort of high-minded philosophical territory that could fuel a dozen or so PhD dissertations. Taken at face value, BioShock Infinite is a ripping science-fiction yarn, a beautiful art show and a tactically layered shooter. Indeed, upon reflection, it feels like an essential footnote. I want anyone who picks up a copy of BioShock Infinite to bear Levine's sentiment in mind. "Nothing of this is an attempt to be cute." But I never forgot his answer and it loomed over the entire 10 or so hours it took for me to complete his new game. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone reading this, so I won't reveal what aspect of the game I asked him about. During the interview, I asked him about something I'd noticed in his new game that referenced his earlier work. His range of personal imagery and projects are presented in the form of personal photographs, texts, hand-drawn tattoo “flash,” tattoo-inspired drawings, and a large-scale mural created specifically for GRAM’s lobby. The exhibition’s narrative format draws on Zulueta’s personal and cultural history, as well as the historical cultures that greatly influenced his work. Zulueta, Hawaiian born of Filipino heritage, describes his bold, all-black designs as “a style of tattooing that is influenced by the various indigenous tribes that have tattooed over the last thousand years.” Zulueta always creates his own designs that are unique to the individual wearer, considering it “disrespectful to copy traditional designs exactly… without having any personal relationship to these cultures.”īlack Waves: The Tattoo Art of Leo Zulueta is a visual biography of the man largely responsible for the popularization of tribal tattooing. The bold designs hold symbolic significance, with each nation developing their own motifs characterized by stylistic geometric patterning, at times covering all areas of the wearer’s body. He began to develop his own designs inspired by these traditional Pacific Rim motifs, and has been tattooing his own clients since 1981. Also, because creating bins and barrels from metal is an involved process involving more steps, less common resources, and fuel, wood is often preferred for making these items as well. Trees are useful for the wood they provide, and wood is a basic building material, important for being the only material that can be used to create beds. As such, smaller maps are recommended, especially for less powerful computers. All radio emissions detected were within 1° (60 arcminutes) of the known celestial coordinates of the comet as it transited the neighborhood of the "Wow!" Signal. The investigation discovered that comet 266/P Christensen emitted a radio signal at 1420.25 MHz. From 27 November 2016 to 24 February 2017, the Center for Planetary Science conducted 200 observations in the radio spectrum to validate the hypothesis. In 2016, the Center for Planetary Science proposed a hypothesis arguing a comet and/or its hydrogen cloud were a strong candidate for the source of the "Wow!" Signal. Hydrogen Line Observations of Cometary Spectra at 1420 MHZ, Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, /research/the-wow-signal/ ( Paper PDF) The team then got a chance to test their idea as the two comets appeared once again in the night sky from November 2016 through February of 2017. Those comets, P/2008 Y2(Gibbs) and 266/P Christensen had not yet been discovered. The team noted that two comets had been in the same part of the sky that the Big Ear was monitoring on the fateful day. The explanation started to come into focus last year when a team at the CPS suggested that the signal might have come from a hydrogen cloud accompanying a comet-additionally, the movement of the comet would explain why the signal was not seen again. It was noted that the frequency was transmitted at 1,420 MHz, though, which happens to be the same frequency as hydrogen. Some outside the science community even suggested that it was proof of aliens. Possible sources such as asteroids, exo-planets, stars and even signals from Earth have all been ruled out. Since that time, numerous scientists have searched for an explanation of the signal, but until now, no one could offer a valid argument. Back in August of 1977, a team of astronomers studying radio transmissions from an observatory at Ohio State called the "Big Ear" recorded an unusual 72-second signal-it was so strong that team member Jerry Ehman scrawled "Wow!" next to the readout. |
